GENERAL:

Dear Members,

Further to my address at the Last Annual General Meeting and the subsequent communications in the Newsletter, the Management Committee has completed its review of our income and expenditure positions and concluded that our recurrent expenses are increasingly and continuously in excess of income for the following reasons: -

(i)                 Our membership number is reducing or at best stagnant due to falling new application vis-à-vis increasing resignations for economic and emigration reasons.

(ii)               Our bar sales/income is reducing or at best stagnant due to falling patronage and limited to a small fraction of consistent members.

(iii)              Investment income has dropped by almost 70% in the last three (3) years due to sharp decreases in the interest rates on fixed deposits.

(iv)             Our electricity cost have shot up by about 67% in the last three (3) years due to variation in the tariff rates.

(v)              Our wage bill has grown by about 23% over the last three (3) years due to commitment of the club to the Collective Bargaining Agreement over the years.

(vi)             Our subscriptions have remained static since 1999 when they were last reviewed.

This position is despite Management’s efforts to aggressively improve income and cut back as much as practicable on expenses, over the year.

In the circumstances the Management Committee has decided to resort to the following measures: -

  1. Reviewing of member’s subscriptions by 33% in accordance with rule 31(xii) of the Club Rules with effect from 1st August, 2002.
  2. Effect an employment freeze and re-deploy the existing staff appropriately.
  3. Rationalize the staff establishment.
  4. Explore other and new sources of income especially advertisement.
  5. Review our stand with regard to the Collective Bargaining Agreement on staff wages and explore alternatives available.

These measures have been inevitable and call for your concerted co-operation.

Lounge Furniture

The suppliers of the lounge furniture have admitted full liability for the low quality of material used for the cushions and have agreed to replace it at their cost. We are in the process of identifying new material and it is anticipated that new cushions will be in place by mid July.

SECTION REPORTS:

BOWLING

C. C. SHAH’ S TEAM WON THE CLUB TWO WOOD TRIPS

The Club Two Wood Trips was played on the 1st & 2nd June with six teams. The first round was a high scoring game with C. C. Shah, Natu Nathwani & Rasila Shah winning against K. P. Shah, Deepa Mukhopadhya & Sakina Mamujee whilst Raman Patel, H.S. Mahajan & Hamida Jafferali had an easy win against Kirti Chhaniyara, Kusum Patel & M. K. Mamujee.

At the end of the day when Kirti Chhaniyara’s team won against C. C. Shah’s team, it made the tournament wide open creating a free for all chance of winning the tournament.

On Sunday, K. P. Shah’s team won both the games and C. C. Shah’s team drew one and had a high score win also.  Thus, C.C. Shah’s team won the tournament with K. P. Shah’s team as runners up.

The next tournament Club Pairs Tournament will be played on 21st /22nd & 28th /29th June 02.

                        MONTHLY   MUG

The monthly Mug Bowls competition was played on Saturday, the 15th, with 20 players – one Rink and four Trips.

All the teams played 8 woods and 18 ends.  It was a close match for all, but the aggressive Raman Patel with Natu Nathwani & Sakina Mamujee had the highest score, thus winning the competition.

The month of June is plagued with World Cup fever and therefore we had to cancel the Club Pairs, because of lack of entries.  It clashed with the finals of the World Cup.

The next tournament is the Club Fours on 13th/14th & 20th/ 21st July.

Good Bowling.

TENNIS

ATP WORLD RANKING TOUR- 29TH JUNE TO 7TH JULY, ’02  AT

MOMBASA SPORTS CLUB

As you all are aware, the recently organized Davis Cup tournament held at the Club was a major success.  The Tennis section is pleased to confirm that the Association of Tennis Professionals [ATP] has recognized the high quality of organization of the Davis Cup event, which is a clear indication of the fact that international tennis tournaments can be successfully held at the Mombasa Sports Club.  The experience of organising the Davis Cup event has given us the confidence to host the ATP World Ranking Tour, which frankly, is an even more prestigious event in the tennis circuit.  You will no doubt appreciate that in nominating Mombasa Sports Club as a host venue, the ATP also has the confidence in our ability to organise a world class event.

As it is undoubtedly the case that the ATP World Ranking Tour is of much higher profile than the Davis Cup tournament, this gives you an opportunity to watch upcoming seeded players at this event.  We take this opportunity to invite all members to come and watch the matches absolutely free i.e. there aren’t any gate charges.

By way of information, the men’s singles draw qualifying round has a total of 64 players whilst the main draw will have 32 players.  The main draw for the men’s doubles is 32 pairs with no qualification round.  In addition, the tennis facilities at the Mombasa Sports Club have been and will continue to be further enhanced and improved so that the Club will be seen to be a very attractive venue for the members, players and spectators.

On behalf of the Tennis section, we would like to thank the following Sponsors for supporting this event: -

Maersk Sealand, Spedag, Gold Crow Beverages [K] Ltd., Pearly Waters, British Airways, operated by Regional Air, Coca Cola, Simba Colt Motors, Rakal Ltd., Miritini Building Products, Kipevu Inland Container Depot, Kenya Ports Authority, Mukhi & Sons Ltd., just to name a few.

CRICKET:

SEYCHELLES TOUR REPORT

MSC Cricket team went to Seychelles to participate in a Triangular Tournament involving the Seychelles and Maldives national sides.

The Ministry of Sports in the Seychelles sponsors these tournament as part of the Independence Day celebrations and they range across a wide variety of sports including Football and Rugby.

These events are covered extensively by the national Press and media and our team was very much in the spotlight having travelled a long distance to get there compared to other teams.

The conditions were not particularly suitable for the game of Cricket. We played in a football stadium with an athletics track running round it. The ground was used for football and rugby prior to the game. There was no turf wicket and the match was played simply on a coir mat which was laid on the grass.

In our games against both sides, we batted first in the rain and the conditions were somewhat treacherous with the ball coming with uneven bounce. Conditions on both days improved in the afternoon when the sun came out and our opponents were batting. We lost narrowly to the Seychelles. Against Maldives Islands, although the team was skittled out for a low score MSC fought back in the afternoon making things particularly difficult for our opponents getting half their side out before they scored their winning run.

Our relations with the Maldives Islands team were not good. They had made themselves particularly unpopular with both their opponents by what was perceived to be unjustified arrogance by their coach and captain towards their opponents and hosts. Seychelles have confirmed that they will not invite the Maldives Islands again.

Our discipline on the tour was good and no incident of any significance occurred. Our team got on extremely well with the Seychelles national side and likewise our officials became good friends of the various committee members of the Seychelles Cricket Association. Particularly, please was the performance of the younger members of our side – in particular, Zahir Abbas Khaku, Neel Karia and Amit Bij all of whom played exceptionally well to lift our side in moment of crisis.

On behalf or the Cricket Section we have extended an invitation to the Seychelles team to play in Mombasa in November of this year. We will be expected to reciprocate in the same way (i.e. accommodation and transport) and they have tentatively accepted.

I was made to understand that MSC will be invited by the Seychelles National Council to participate in more than one sporting event next year. I will be glad to pass on any information about this in due course.

Finally, I would like to extend, on behalf of the Cricket Section, my thanks to the Main Committee for their support, and in particular, to all our members who have overwhelmed us with their generosity in giving donations to enable the team to travel.
