TENNIS:
Coast open junior tennis tournament, which was
recently held at Mombasa Sports club, attracted over 40 junior players. The
tournament had boys singles & double categories while girls had only
singles category. Boys event was
further sub-divided in 12 & under, 14 & under, 16 & under and 18
& under categories, while boys doubles was an open category.
Girls event, which was also open category, was
played on round robin format. In the first semi-final Linda beat Rubaina 6-2,
6-3, while new comer Sonia, who trains under the hawk’s eye of Aldrin, pulled a
surprise win of 6-4, 7-5 over her arch rival Puja. Although Puja hit few
brilliant down the line shots, it was Sonia who kept on returning the ball with
minimum errors. Unfortunately Sonia ran out of steam in her maiden final &
lost to more experienced player Linda 6-3, 6-2
In 12 & under boys singles first semi-final
Nachiket Yardi beat Klaus Teller 7-6(8/6), 7-5 while Yash Rawal, from Nairobi
trashed Isuru Weerarathane 6/1, 6/1. In the final Yash Rawal won the first set
6/4 rather easily but with home crowd support local player, Nachiket won the
second set with identical margin. Match inexperience let Nachiket down &
Yash went on to win the final set 6-4.
In 14 & under boys singles final Juma
Changawa beat his younger brother Khalid Changawa 6-2, 6-3.
Jinal romp into the final of 16 & under by
thrashing Maurice Namai 6-2, 4-0 (RTD)
in the 1st semi final. While in the 2nd semi-final Faiz
Bakari pulled a surprise win 5-7, 6-1 & 8-6 over Ronny Ndinya in a marathon
match. The match lasted close to three hours. Jinal Shah easily won the final
6-2, 6-4 against Faiz Bakari.
A new winner emerged in 18 & under category
when Hosea Aliro beat Kennedy Oduor 6-3, 2-6, 10-8 in the final. In the
previous semi-final Hosea beat Ronny Ndinya of Nairobi in rather straight sets
6-3, 7-5, while in the second semi-final Faiz Bakari lost to Kennedy Oduor
6-1,6-3.
The above results perhaps indicate Mombasa Sports
Club’s dominance at the National Junior Level since all the winners in 18 &
under, 16 & under. 14 & under and runner up for 12 & under category
were from Mombasa. Keep it up Tennis section !
