GENERAL:
Have you thought of
having billboards or quality adverts in the Clubhouse and its surroundings?
Pushed by the need to get away from our Club traditional way of earning Income
to meet running costs viz. bar surpluses and subscriptions, the committee is
deeply focusing on this issue with the following view in sight: -
(a) What is the objective?
(b) What sort of advertisements?
(c) How will revenue be generated?
(d) How will these revenues be allocated?
(e) How will the revenue be used?
(f) What are some advantages (1) to Club
(2) to Sections (3) to Member
We are collating
opinions from general membership which will enable us arrive to a better
decision kindly let us have your written views/criticisms addressed to the Hon.
Secretary, Mombasa Sports Club.

GOOD BOWLING
TENNIS:
Much-awaited Davis cup
by BNP Paribas for Euro-Africa group IV starts on 6th Feb. This is
the first time in the 106 years history of Mombasa Sports Club the Davis Cup
tie will be held in the club. Perhaps it is a fitting tribute to freshly
acquired City status of Mombasa. It will also herald a new chapter in sports
catapulting Mombasa Sports Club into the elite list of international Tennis
venues.
All the matches will
start after the grand opening ceremony on 6th Feb in the morning at
9.00 a.m. & will be played on recently renovated & upgraded courts,
which now fully comply with International Tennis Federation norms. The outfield
of the Tennis section has been converted into lush green landscape under the
supervision of club’s Asst. manager Mr. Munala. Mombasa Sports Club has already
spent over Ksh 1.2 million to refurbish all seven courts.
The opening match for
Kenya on 6th Feb is scheduled against Rwanda. Kenya plays in-group A
along with Rwanda & Djibouti. The
countries in-group B are Angola, Algeria, Malta & Ethiopia. All the matches
will start at 10.00 a.m. with No. 2 singles followed by No. 1 singles &
last match of the day will be doubles. Matches are expected to last up to
6.00-p.m. everyday.
Ethiopian team is the
first to arrive at the venue. They jet in on 3rd Feb. The Captain of
the Ethiopian team Yohannes Lakew is a talented player. Although Lakew, who is
27 years of age, is the oldest player in the team, the average age of the team
is only 23. Youngest player of the team Elias is still in his sweet sixteen.
The other players of the team are Setegn, Micheal & Kidan.
Rwanda team is arriving on 4th
Feb. The team comprises Sylvain Rutikanga, Eric Hagenimana, Jean-Claude Gasigwa
and Alain Hakizimana. The non-playing captain is Thierry Ntwali and the
official accompanying the team is Freddy Somayire. Mombasa will not be a
strange place for Thierry, Rwanda’s non-playing captain, since he has been to
Mombasa during previous ITF events at Mombasa Sports Club.
Algerian tennis team,
2nd team to arrive, will be in Mombasa on 4th February. Their team
comprises of Abdelhak Hameurlaine, Noureddine Mahmoudi, Lamine Ouahab and
Sofiane Dob. The non-playing Captain is Noujeim Hakimi and the official
accompanying the team is Dr Smati Reda.
Malta, the only European
Nation in Euro/Africa group IV, is also arriving in Mombasa on 4th
Feb in the late evening. They will be just in time to attend the opening
cocktail party at their official Hotel & one of the corporate sponsors
Nyali Beach Hotel. Their team comprises of Mark Schembri (playing Captain),
Luke Bonello, Matthew DeBono, & Maurizio Cappello.
Sudan has meanwhile withdrawn from the
Euro/Africa Group IV Davis Cup-tie. The other two countries who have already
withdrawn are Gabon & Benin. Both have sited financial constrain as a major
reason for withdrawal.
Meanwhile, the Kenyan
team, which is sponsored by Samsung mobile phone, is undergoing extensive
training at Mombasa Sports Club under the watchful, hawk-eyed non- playing
Captain Karenge Nganga.
Kenya team consists of
Karenge Nganga (non-playing Captain), Allen Cooper, Nobert Oduor, Francis
Rogoi, Anthony Kiruki & Sammy Muriuki (reserve). Allen Cooper & Anthony
Kariuki are both U.S. based players & have been specially brought in from
United States to strengthen the Kenyan side.
Kenya will have to make
a valiant effort to top their group during this tournament. This in turn will
upgrade them from existing group IV to group III for the next year’s Davis cup
matches. It may be recalled that Kenya was relegated from Euro/Africa group III
to group IV after failing to top the group, in Botswana, last year. Kenya has
never played against Djibouti in last 10 years. Their record against Rwanda is
100 % win having played only once against them in last one decade. Kenya won against
Rwanda3-0 in Kampala, Uganda couple of years ago.
Mombasa Sports Club had
to face mammoth logistical problem in holding the Davis tie. Since the
requirement of line judges is quite large for such an event, a special Level 1
certificate course was organised by Mombasa Sports Club in association with
KLTA (Kenya Lawn Tennis Association) on 19th & 20th
January 2002. Mr. John Warambo, KLTA chairman & white badge umpire,
conducted the course for the line judges. The course, which includes on the
court & off the court training, generated a good response from the Tennis
supporters. Over 40 officials from various walks of life attended the course.
All will now receive International Tennis Federation level 1 certificate. This
certification will now allow them to officiate as line judge in any
international tennis tournament. Twenty official from this freshly trained lot
will be picked up to officiate Davis cup tie between 6th & 10th
Feb. 15 more line judges will join these locally trained line judges, from Nairobi. All the line judges selected for the Davis
cup will also receive special Dark colour T-shirt & a cap.
A total of 40 Ball boys
from various schools within Mombasa are also under going extensive training for
the Davis cup-tie. Some of the aspects of their training include position of
the ball boys, Ball pick-up from the court & throwing the ball at the
players. Each of the selected ball boys will receive T-shirt, Short & Cap.
The Davis Cup will also give all these youngsters unique opportunity to watch
some of the finest players in action from the African/European continent
There are seven courts
in the Tennis section of Mombasa Sports Club. Out of which 4 courts will be
used for actual matches while remaining will be used for training purpose at
the discretion of Chief Umpire. Plenty of sitting arrangement is available in
& around court no.6, which is also centre court for this tournament. Some
of the corporate sponsors for this event are Grain Bulk Handlers, Samsung,
Safaricom & Milly group, while the company sponsors are Kenya Port
Authority, Maersk, Nyali Beach Hotel & Alba group of companies.
Daily entrance ticket for junior (under 14)
is Ksh 50 while for an adult it is Ksh 100. All the entry tickets of the day
are entitled for automatic entry into the draw where a lucky winner will be
picked up at the end of each day. The lucky winner will receive a mobile phone
from Samsung. Please note the lucky winner must be present during the draw in
the evening. There are 5 mobile phones to be won during 5 days of the
