TENNIS:
ATP WORLD RANKING TOURNAMENT- 1ST JULY TO 7TH JULY, 2002

The final leg of the EAST AND CENTRAL AFRICAN MENS PROFESSIONAL TENNIS CIRCUIT, an ATP World Ranking Tournament, took place at Mombasa Sports Club from 1st   to 7th July 2002. Thirty two [32] players from over twenty countries competed in the tournament.

In the singles finals Tunisia's no.1, Oualid Jallali beat Richard Bloomfield from England [6-3, 6-2]. Bloomfield, sporting a David Beckham style hair cut, was unable to deal with Jallali's powerful and accurate ground strokes early on in the match and lost the first three games. Bloomfield then regained his composure and levelled the match at 3 - 3 using his formidable forehand to good effect and mixing up his game by playing delicate drop shots and occasionally coming into the net in an effort to unsettle the Tunisian. However, Jallali remained totally focused on his game and showed great athleticism in his movement around the court. His ability to counter punch even when on the back foot enabled him to wrap up the first set. In the second set Bloomfield lost his way, unable to reach the level of consistency necessary to trouble Jallali.

In the double final Genlus Chidzikwe (Zim) and Johan Du Randt (RSA) beat Barry Fulcher (GBR) and Gwenael Gueit (FRA) 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. Chidzikwe and Du Randt struggled to find their range in the first set but fought back strongly in the next two sets to take the match.

After staging the Davis Cup and an ATP World Ranking tournament already this year, Mombasa Sports Club is fast becoming an established venue for world class tennis. The ATP World Ranking tournament is set to become an annual event at the Mombasa Sports Club.

Funding for the tournament was provided in part by a grant from the Grand Slam Development Fund that is administered by the International Tennis Federation, and by a number of corporate sponsors including Miritini Building Products, Baraka Chai, British Airways, Spedag, Maersk Sealand and Pearly Waters Ltd.
